Description

Do you use Accountable Talk in your classroom?

Sentence stems have long been proven to help students engage in meaningful conversation and verbalize their trains of thought. These speech bubbles are intended to promote rigorous and thoughtful conversations between peers during instruction. While I used them primarily during whole group read alouds, they are applicable to any subject area where you'd like to hold your students accountable to meaningful conversations.

In this download you'll find a set of printable speech bubbles reflecting eight possible options: agree, disagree, link, build, challenge, predict, evidence, and clarify. These options represent what students have to choose from when they are unsure of what to say to a question that has been posed or a statement that has been made. Students are trained to analyze the choices and use a sentence stem to help them verbalize their thinking. This set of speech bubbles can be displayed on a wall, put up on a bulletin board, hung from the ceiling, or even printed and put on a binder ring for students to use. Need a smaller size? Try printing two to a page!
