This Accounting Cycle Learning Center is customizable to your needs. Usable in any Accounting class (Accounting I, II, or Advanced / College Accounting).
This learning center works great on a bulletin board or class whiteboard. Works great as an ongoing multi-semester note taking tool. It should take about 1/2 of a school year at the high school level to work through the entire learning center.
A small amount of prep work is necessary to use throughout your career (can be done by students). Make sure to laminate your creation so it will last year after year. Using the headings, construction paper, and sample accounting forms you can create a visual representation of the accounting cycle through a fiscal period. I color coded my accounting procedures with orange for creating permanent accounting records (journalizing, preparing financial statements, etc.) and green for preparing temporary accounting forms (worksheets, posting, etc.). Using the drawn and printed arrows I was able to represent how each step relates to each other and where we were in the accounting cycle. We went through the full cycle 3 times in a year. The first time through I put each step up as we completed it (with blank examples to the sides and finished examples underneath the construction paper). The second and third times through the cycle I used the larger arrow to note where we were in the cycle.
This learning center is a large representation of the entire accounting cycle for a sole proprietorship. For each step we would learn we would discuss how one another relate to each other (the drawn arrows) and why complete them in that order. Each step includes a blank representation of the accounting forms used, while underneath (to prevent cheating during exams) includes a completed form or process from the accounting cycle. (See photos).
At the end of the year this cycle was a part of their final exam.
