This lab is a fantastic way to teach students about how the pH scale can be used in their daily lives. I have students test various solutions that you have either in your classroom or at home (I usually use orange juice, pop, milk, household cleaners, diluted shampoo solution, and an antacid solution); the great thing is that you can choose almost Any liquids that you would like for the students to test, or you can even them choose the day before! You will need the following lab supplies: test tubes, pipettes, red and blue litmus paper, pH paper, and universal pH indicator solution. The Only thing you might have to order in advance if you have the various pH paper strips would be the universal pH indicator solution, but even that can be made with cabbage juice that has countless recipes online! My students love this lab as it really puts acids and bases into perspective, and they learn that acids and bases really are “all over the places!” :) Have fun!
