This is an excellent activity to use when teaching acids and bases. It does take some time to set up the activity the first go around, but the solutions are common items that you probably already have on hand in your classroom, school, or home. The rest of the materials I keep together in a plastic tub (sort of like a kit) that I can just pull out when I get ready to do that lab.
I have included 2 different lab sheets with 2 different sets of directions: for testing with pH meters, or testing with litmus paper strips. I used the litmus strips myself for several years; until I built up a supply of pH meters for my classroom (eBay is a great place to buy stuff like this if you're going to be using your own money anyway). Now I use the pH meters for this activity. The students like using the pH meters better and of course now I don't have little strips of paper everywhere after the lab is over!
This lesson also includes a useful materials list (with pictures of course!) and directions on how to set-up this lab, as well as how I perform this lab with my own students and how I store the reusuable materials from year-to year as a kit.
