★ ★ Acids and Bases Litmus Paper Lab ★ ★

This activity supports students through a guided lab in being able to recognize an acid or a base, reading litmus paper, and reading pH paper.

About This Activity:
This lab is intended to be used to determine whether common substances are acids or bases in the middle grades curriculum.
After reading the purpose and research for the lab, have the students create hypothesis for each substance that will be tested. They will make their hypotheses by checking a column in a chart. They will also check a column in their data table. This will allow them to easily compare their hypotheses and results later in the lab.
Before setting up the lab, consider your materials. Setting the lab up into eight stations and asking the students to rotate the room in a stations format will allow you to use less materials. At each station, the students will fill out the row for the substance in the chart.
If you have access to pH paper, there is a column in the data column for students to test the pH and record it. If you do not have access to pH paper, you can have the students the pH. They can do this using their devices or for homework as follow up to the lab before writing their conclusions and reflecting on their results.

Modifications:
The lab was created to be used in a collaboratively taught special education and regular education classroom. For this reason, there is less writing on the lab and the focus remains on the processing of the big ideas (for example: check marks instead of writing out full sentences). The lab can be differentiated for students by using the optional third page of the lab that has sentence starters.

Included In This Activity:
♦ teacher guide
♦ 2 page lab
♦ 1 page optional conclusion page

Additional Materials Needed(not included):
♦ red and blue litmus paper, coffee, pepto-bismol, antacid tablets, coca-cola, baking powder, dishwasher soap, vinegar, lemon juice, pH paper (optional)
