My 7th and 8th graders never let me forget to include our “Poem-of-the-Day” in our daily agenda, so I had to compile a full year’s worth of poems to read, analyze, and write.
I believe students enjoy the brevity of poems. I can keep them engaged in close reading for a longer period of time using poetry, and of course, I always compare poems to song lyrics – once students realize their favorite songs are “poems set to music” they are hooked!
Although middle schoolers have been reading acrostic poems since elementary grades, they still enjoy reading and writing acrostics.
This 20-page mini-unit on acrostic poetry includes:
-10 Acrostic Poems
-6 Double Acrostic Poems
-3 Alphabet Acrostic Poems
I have included some simple poems and some challenging poems to allow for differentiation, close reading, and study of author’s craft. The teaching tips also include several ideas for differentiation so this min-unit can be easily taught in inclusive classrooms or special education classrooms.
