These lessons are an introduction to creating algebraic equations. Each includes a warm-up, teacher led practice, student practice and homework with answer keys. They are intended for two 90 minute periods.
6.EE. 2 Write, read, and evaluate expressions in which letters stand for numbers.
6.EE.6 Use variables to represent numbers and write expressions when solving a real-world or mathematical problem.
Essential Question: How can I use equations with variables to represent real life scenarios?
Overview: The goals of these lessons are as follows…
*Introduce students to the difference between expressions and equations
*Allow students to create equations based on statements
*Allow students to create equations based on a real life scenario
*Allow students to use the equations they created to form an algebraic equation with variables and articulate an understanding of what each variable means
**Side note: I am very interested in feedback. I am hoping to create an entire unit like this to eventually sell so I would appreciate thoughts about what worked and what did not so I can perfect it! Thank-you!
