Preschool Language/Literacy Skills -
*Retell simple directions - Read the card and ask your child what they are supposed to do.
*Identifies letters in name - If your child recognizes their name when printed, begin asking if they can recognize the letters when they aren't printed together.
*Indicates where to start reading - Ask your child where you should start reading each card. Use your finger to demonstrate the direction you are reading the words from left to right.
*Recognizes differences between pictures and letters in print - Let your child trace the letters with their finger, ask them which letters/animals are different.
*Answers "where is" questions - Ask where is the flower/bumblebee/letter and see if they can point to it.
*Asks "what is...this/that - Start by asking them what something is, and they will quickly be asking about everything in the pictures.
*Recognizes if words/pictures are upside down - Mix the cards and see if they correct them for you.
*Recalls names of animals - Eventually they should begin telling you what the animal is before you say it.
Advanced Skill Opportunities
*Practice each letter sound - Start with letters they already recognize in print
*Write each letter - Trace with fingers or laminate and use crayons.
