Product Description

'What Is Happening At Home?' is an interactive book, which targets the action verbs eating, reading, swimming, watching, working, jumping, sleeping, brushing, talking and building. Students can also determine the pronoun and object within each image. Students will learn to label actions, verbalise SVO sentences and extend their sentences.

Designed for Special education, Students with Autism, Speech Therapy, Early Intervention or Early Childhood Classrooms.

The book features 10 pages, each with its own real life photograph of a person completing an action in a home setting. Underneath the image is the corresponding sentence segments with spaces for the student to select the correct visuals for 'who' (Pronoun), 'doing' (action verb) and 'what' (noun). Each section of the sentence is colour coded to allow the student to identify which visuals go where e.g. verbs are blue and are placed in the blue 'doing' box (see preview).

Students select the correct visuals from an array determined by the teacher/therapist and placed on page 9 using Velcro. This page is to remain at full size while other pages are trimmed in half. This will allow the visuals to be visible as the student works. Visuals on page 9 will need to be changed every few pages. Only a small array should be visible at one time to avoid overwhelming the student with choices.

Visuals have been created using Smarty Symbols. Smarty Symbols are specifically designed to be easily interpreted and used by students with special needs such as autism.

To prepare the book simply trim pages 1-8 in half and laminate. Place soft Velcro on the who/doing/what boxes on each page and the Velcro here strips on pages 7-8. Laminate page 9 whole and place soft Velcro on the strips. Bind Pages 1-9 together on the top edge (page 9 should be visible at all times). Cut and laminate the visuals on pages 10-11 and place hard Velcro on the back of them. These can now be stored on pages 7-8 and placed on page 9 when in use. Please see preview for clarification.
