These active learning strategies are great ways to get students up and moving, thinking critically, and collaborating!
These active learning strategy posters are based on the protocols in the appendix of the NYS Grades 3-5 ELA Common Core curriculum on www.engageny.org. For a more detailed explanation and procedure, visit https://www.engageny.org/resource/grades-3-5-ela-curriculum-appendix-1-teaching-practices-and-protocols. The appendix can be downloaded free of charge.
Use these posters with students to explain the procedure and expectations of each protocol. While these protocols are geared toward ELA, many can be used across curriculum areas.
Many of the posters refer to a "signal." In my classroom, we use a chime as our signal. When students hear the chime, they stop and give me their attention. You can use whatever signal you have already established in your classroom (clapping, a saying, turning off the lights, etc.).
NOTE: Not all protocols are included in these posters. I have chosen 18 that I felt were most appropriate for this age group. They are:
3-2-1 Exit Ticket
GoGoMo (Give One, Get One, Move On)
Quiz-Quiz-Trade (version 1)
Quiz-Quiz-Trade (version 2)
