Active listening is not keeping quiet and gazing out the window. Active listening is not being able to repeat the last phrase that was said. Active listening is engagement. Active listening is processing and acting on information. This activity will show your students the difference between being silent and really listening. I use this activity at the beginning of the year to show students how I want them to actively listen to directions and discussions. It is impossible to actively listen for a whole class period, but there are pieces of time each and every day that active listening is required. The students love this activity and we refer to it throughout the year. I even take a few minutes and refresh their memories about Active Listening after Christmas Break.
