This activity focuses on active reading for a purpose in the novel "Speak" by Laurie Halse Anderson and is aligned to Common Core. The file contains three Active Reading Group packets. Each packet is differentiated for level of difficulty and focuses on one of three focused areas of study. The first and highest leveled group is 'Character Development,' the middle group is 'Theme,' and the lower group is 'Literary Devices.' The Character Development group focuses on Melinda's development and change throughout the novel. The packet allows for a great deal of student autonomy and self-directed learning. The Theme Group requires more teacher intervention and the Literary Devices Group requires the most teacher intervention. The activities are designed to allow the teachers to assign and teach whatever themes or literary devices appropriate to their curriculum. The assignment culminates with a presentation by each group to the class where the students teach the class about their group's focus of study. I used GoogleDocs during this final assessment phase and would highly recommend it. Feel free to email me for details on how I went about doing so.
