As a long time social studies and science teacher -- subjects that are actively changing our lives and our communities today -- I believe that it is essential for students to be able to carefully read current events. More specifically, I believe that it is essential for students to read current events with a critical eye -- spotting places where they are confused, questions that they still have, and/or points in the text where the author is giving an opinion instead of stating a fact.
This handout is designed to support that process. It introduces students to specific steps that readers take when tackling new text and provides a simple process for students to follow to debrief on a current event with a thinking partner.
