Students need to interact and engage with the text, but how do we know if they are active readers? This resource will help you help your readers. I’ve developed these active reading strategy key rings to draw attention so they independently monitor their own reading. Pointing out these strategies and “noticing” when they’re being used will help me see which strategies my students aren’t using or which strategy bank my students are always pulling from. This information through conferencing and observing will guide my instruction for small group and whole group. It is critical that we allow our students independent reading time to practice the skills we teach them. Active reading strategies included are: making predictions, visualizing, rereading/read ahead, making connections, questioning, character analysis, making inferences, favorite words and phrases, summarizing, and evaluating.
