This 6-page activity booklet is an excellent tool for teaching active and passive voice for both first-language English speakers and ESL students. I have used it in my classroom for years, with both types of students.
It is a rigorous, step-by-step guide. It starts with the basics: what active and passive voice are, and when we choose to use them. This is accompanied by basic examples.
The level of difficulty increases, moving on to more complex sentences, for example sentences containing adverbs, adverbial phrases and pronouns, as well as how to express commands in the passive voice.
The last activity steers students towards more applied, higher-order thinking by getting them to think about the political application of the agentless passive voice: how politicians use this voice to avoid culpability.
