Independent reading and reading workshop are a wonderful way to turn our kids into lifelong readers. However, many teachers fear that they won’t be able to teach specific skills and standards when their students are reading different books. I’m here to tell you that it’s very possible; in fact, I find that kids learn the skills of literary analysis more quickly when they have the freedom to choose their own books.

These sticky notes are part of my Reader's Workshop Bundle, a product with lots of help for those wanting to use workshop in their secondary classroom.

This product offers you a variety of activities that you can use to help your students become active readers who can effectively analyze their texts. These activities will teach them the habits of active reading and will guide them to have meaningful discussions about literature.

The file includes:

• Instructions for how to teach your kids to use sticky notes for analyzing their own texts

• Sticky sheets that focus on literary elements like characterization, thematic development, author's use of language, etc.

• Graphic organizers to help students prepare for small group discussions about the literary elements they have been tracking

• an editable template so you can create your own sticky sheets

Would you like to see how I use these in my own classroom? You can read all about it in this blog post.
