This activity packet, directly aligned with the Common Core Standards, has students study, analyze, and reflect on Martin Luther King, Jr.’s famous “I Have a Dream Speech”. Here is what is included:
• Vocabulary – there are many challenging words in this speech. I found it useful to assign vocabulary words to different groups as a jigsaw activity and have groups present to the class.
• Discussion Questions – these thought provoking questions can be used in small-group or whole-group instruction or can be used as a choice assessment where students choose which questions to answer.
• Textual / Oral Presentation Analysis – this activity is directly correlated to the new Common Core Standards and provides a great follow up activity after reading and listening to the speech.
• “I Am Poems” – these can be used as a final project, a formative assessment, or just for fun! “I Am” poems are a great way to assess your student’s knowledge of a person.
