This product contains a variety of activities for the short story “The Gift of the Magi” by O. Henry. The items included in this product are listed in detail below.
-Secret Santa: This is a handout with instructions for a Secret Santa gift exchange for students to complete as a prereading activity for this story. It is a great way to promote a discussion leading into the theme of the story. (It’s the thought that counts, not the price of the gift.)
-Anticipation Guide: 10 questions-Students first complete the assignment individually. For #1-8, students state if they agree or disagree with the statement and explain why or why not. For #9-10, students answer the question. After students complete this individually, I have a class discussion about their responses.
-This is a PowerPoint I created of terms and allusions in the story to help students further their comprehension of the text. The intent is for the PPT to be on in the background as students are reading the story. The following terms/allusions are listed in the PPT with a brief description and pictures:
*Magi (only pictures)
*Gifts of the Magi
*Money Conversion-The amount of money the protagonist has to spend on her husband is difficult for students to grasp, so I found a conversion online for how much the money would be in modern times. The closest conversion I found online was for 1905 to 2014.
*Queen of Sheba
*Platinum Fob Chain (only pictures)
*Hair Combs (only pictures)
-Creative Projects: This contains a handout with 5 different creative project options for student to choose from after having read the story. One of the options is to create a comic strip of the plot. I have included a basic template students could use to complete this option.
-Left Right Game: To reinforce a theme of this story, I have students play this game. Instructions are included on the handout.
