Figurative language is what can take our kids’ writing to the next level. Bring the descriptive aspect of the students’ writing to a higher level in your class through inquiry based literacy work. The Common Core is leading us towards more child centered inquiry and less teaching “at” the children. The learning within this 25 page, printable packet is designed with this philosophy in mind.
This game can be played as a whole class activity or smaller guided groups. It is a fun formative assessment tool also. Using idioms, similes, metaphors, onomatopoeia, personification, hyperbole and alliteration with this activity, the children are both learning about the use of applying this figurative language to their writing together with discovery of how it is utilized within text. (CCSS ELA RL.4 Craft and Structure) Inferring is addressed also.
