I use this assignment for my Honors United States History and APUSH classes. I usually assign this when I have completed discussing John Adams' presidency and about to start the Election of 1800 and Thomas Jefferson's presidency. This allows for students to practice researching and literacy skills. (This is available in PDF and Microsoft Word.) This lesson includes the following:
Page 1: Teacher Directions to the mini-lesson with links to 4 different short film clips that I use to set the stage for the activity.
Page 2-5: These pages include two viewing guides for History Channel's The Presidents for John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. These pages also include the answer key for these questions as well.
Page 6: This is the Adams-Jefferson Obituary Writing Assignment. Students are to write a one page obituary for one of the two presidents, while pretending to be the other president. The assignment includes Requirements and a Rubric for students to follow.
Page 7: A sample obituary of Theodore Roosevelt written by William Howard Taft. This allows for students to see what the expectations are for the writing assignment.
