This is a great reinforcement for students who are studying the 30-60-90 and 45-45-90 triangles and the relationships among the legs and hypotenuse. Students will use their skills in radical manipulations and rationalizing the denominators. The puzzle is an assembly of a square and various 45-45-90 and 30-60-90 triangles. The measure of only 1 line segment from all of the figures is given, and the students will determine the measure of each and every other line segment using the information they have learned. It is a great assignment for partners, or students can work independently. Another idea is to use it as an extra credit assignment for those who finish other assignments early. Let me add here that the activity is challenging (appropriately named "MONSTER" puzzle), so be prepared. If presented properly, students will have an awesome mathematical time with this. I don't recall exactly where I came across this puzzle, but it is OUTSTANDING; I have saved it forever. Enjoy the share! Have a wonderful day teaching!
