Figurative language is what can take our kids’ writing to the next level. Bring the descriptive aspect of the students’ writing to a higher level in your class through inquiry based literacy work. The Common Core is leading us towards more child centered inquiry and less teaching “at” the children. The learning within this 28 page, printable packet is designed with this philosophy in mind.
Using commonly recognized idioms, the children are both learning about the use of applying this figurative language to their writing together with discovery with vocabulary and sentence structure. Inferring is addressed also.
I designed this packet with my 5th graders in mind. It can of course be adapted for 3rd,4th and 6th grade. It is ideal for literacy/writing centers.
Within this packet:
Identify idioms and their definitions through inquiry
Identify subject and predicate of complete sentences
Matching idioms with their definitions with a fun activity
“Pick 3” practice work activities (pick 3 idiom cards and study them through research, thesaurus, internet etc., follow up with worksheets)
3 related worksheets
52 idiom cards and definition cards for matching games and “Pick 3 Practice” related vocabulary activities
12 differentiated idiom cards for research based vocabulary activities
( the cards with aliens are more challenging than the cards with the wee boy.)
