In this activity, students will construct a DNA model based on a selected sequence using licorice and marshmallows. Then, students will translate their sequence into (fictional) genes that code for specific traits in man’s best friend – a dog.
With groups who may have trouble following instructions, you will likely want to do this step by step as a group. For students who can independently read and follow instructions, they should be able to complete the activity on their own.
Each step contains background information to review important concepts as students build their DNA and translate those genes into observable traits.
