In this activity, students will review field notes taken by a biologist who recently visited a fast moving stream. From the biologists field notes, they will construct a food web diagram of the living things in the stream ecosystem.
This activity was inspired by the NSTA article "Including Often-Missed Knowledge and Skills in Science Assessments," printed in the September 2014 issue of Science Scope. It presents a food web based on that of a northeastern United States fast-moving stream.
To print, open the PDF file with Adobe Acrobat Reader and select the "multiple page" option from the print screen. Print several to a page (suggested minimum is 4) and provide students with all nine pages.
