Learner Objectives: Students will rotate through stations at which they will be asked to observe various physical and chemical properties of substances. Then, they will apply their understanding of properties as a tool by which to identify unknown substances by identifying three “Mystery Substances.”
Instructions: Set up eight property stations with the following objects. Leave the appropriate property card at the station, as well as any additional instruction cards. You may choose to substitute any of the items below with a comparable item.
Meets NGSS Standards:
• understand that each pure substance has characteristic physical and chemical properties that can be used to identify it (NGSS PS1.A)
• make observations and measurements to identify materials based on their properties (NGSS 5-PS1-3)
