In this fun activity, students carry out a chemical reaction (or chemical change) to create a polymer bouncy ball. Students can then identify the indicators that suggest a new substance has been formed.
Polymers are made up of long chains of molecules. How polymers look and feel depends on the type and arrangement of the atoms they are made of. With an easy chemical reaction, students can create a polymer bouncy ball.
Meets NGSS Standards:
5-PS1-4 Conduct investigations to determine whether the mixing of two substances results in a new substance.
DCI PS1-B When two or more substances are mixed, a new substance with different properties may be formed. Total mass remains the same.
