This is a straightforward lab investigation that has learners exploring single replacement reactions and provides experience in utilizing an activity series. Perfect for learners in the upper middle level or for introductory chemistry classes. Very engaging!
This investigation would be a nice inclusion when addressing performance expectations MS-PS1-1, MS-PS1-2, MS-PS1-5, and MS-PS1-6 of the Next Generation Science Standards. Connections to the Science and Engineering Practice of Planning and Carrying Out Investigations come into play here (though students are simply carrying out the investigation in this case).
Note that due to chemicals utilized, safety gear is a must; investigation should not be explored without proper equipment! Goggles must be worn, lab aprons are recommended, hair should be tied back, and proper ventilation is a requirement. Investigation should be tested prior to any students working on it. If unsure how to proceed with investigation, feel free to reach out to me. Also note that the purchaser/user of this investigation assumes all responsibility for student/teacher safety!
