This pre-viewing, viewing, and post-viewing activities in this handout allow for students to enjoy the film without having to listen for discreet details.
All instructions are in French but the activities are easy enough to be completed by a novice high learner who is familiar with weather and adjectives.
In the first exercise, students are given a map of the departments of France. They have to count the departments and then locate the two regions that are featured in the film. They also have to ID countries and bodies of water that border these regions. Next, they have to look at whether forecasts for both regions and explain what typical whether for that region is like. As they view the film, students are asked to list in English 5 things that people from Nord-Pas-de-Calais do differently from the rest of France and 5 stereotypes that the people of France have towards the people of this region. Finally, students are asked to match the character's name with his/her picture and then describe the character's personality traits, likes/dislikes, etc.
I use this handout with my Novice-High students for our unit about welcoming people to your home. It is also nice to leave for a substitute for any level. You could copy all of these activities or just choose one.
You can purchase the movie on iTunes under the name, "Welcome to the Sticks."
