This handout begins with an English synopsis of the film to give the students some background information. Many of them are unfamiliar with the Iranian Revolution and this will give them some context.
Next, students are given pictures of the 5 main characters and asked to identify them.
Then students are given 31 chronological screen shots from throughout the movie and asked to EXPLAIN (not just identify) what is happening in each image. You could have your students explain in either French or English. I prefer to have mine explain in English so that I can be sure that they understood what they watched and that they didn't just have difficulties putting what they observed into words.
Finally, I have 5 analysis questions that students answer about the themes from the film. These questions ask them to compare and contrast and imagine what they would do if they were in the same situation.
I use this film to accompany my AP Unit on Human Rights and Immigration. The film is rated PG-13 and there are a few scenes starting at 46:00 in where the characters are shown smoking pot.
