Ad Logic: Analyzing TV Commercials - Prezi Lesson Plan is a fun, engaging activity for getting students to think about persuasive techniques and to analyze validity of claims, soundness of reasoning, and relevancy of evidence.
I designed this lesson as part of an ongoing unit about persuasive speaking strategies, and what could be a better example of persuasive strategies than a TV commercial? During this one-hour lesson, students will watch several TV commercials, analyzing each one to figure out the persuasive strategies being used. The first half of the lesson uses a guided class discussion to model the analyses we want them to make, and the second half has students analyze commercials on their own by filling out a graphic organizer.
Your students will have a blast with this activity, and you won't have to do any planning because the entire lesson is contained within the PREZI media presentation.
You could use this as a stand-alone lesson, a fun filler activity, or as part of a larger persuasive writing or speaking unit that deals with the use of ETHOS, PATHOS, and LOGOS.
Included in this FREE download:
* A 50-slide PREZI presentation that includes video clips of thirteen TV commercials and serves as a guide for the entire lesson
* A 4-page student worksheet
* A teacher's guide with lesson instructions, ties to Common Core Standards, and tech instructions for running the PREZI
* An example answer page to illustrate how students should fill in the worksheet
The product download will come as a zipped file folder. In order to get the PREZI to play, you must "extract" the files. If you've never done this before, it's very easy. Just right-click on the compressed or zipped folder and click "Extract All."
Remember that you MUST have Flash Player installed on your computer to play a PREZI. And having Flash on Google Chrome doesn't count. Thankfully, it's a free download and a quick, easy installation.
The commercials are links to YouTube videos. So make sure your school internet filter doesn't block YouTube.
Enjoy, and remember to write a review!

I changed one of the commercials (the "Mayhem" one, because the link wasn't working anymore.) Everything should be running fine now.
