Students are given an island, information on this imaginary island’s biome and natural resources. They must use this information to make a plan for adapting to that biome to survive. Each student or group is given a different biome and resource combination. They must use their previous knowledge and research to address all the challenges and questions in the activity.
I give this activity as a wrap up to my physical geography unit. Students have already learned landforms, the influence of oceans currents and elevation on climate, biomes basics, and the basics of natural resources. In this activity I ask them to use that knowledge, plus a little research, to address this problem. Students are encouraged to be accurate with their information, yet creative with their problem solving.
