This product is designed to support your unit on the rainforests, habitats, animal species, and adaptations. It also incorporates literacy skills into science with reading and writing components and activities.
Students start out by narrating the story that makes the animals decide to have a competition. Students learn about the layers of the rainforest and talk about adaptations.
Students then rank the animals in order in which they think they are most likely to survive changes in their environment in a march madness styled bracket (basketball). Students and teacher then draw disaster cards which puts the animals' adaptations to the test. Those that are best at adapting to the circumstances advance to the next round. Students complete writing reflection questions.
In the end, students talk about the importance of the rainforest by reading The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry and discussing how they can reduce impact to the rainforest.
