In this activity, students use an online interactive website to study adaptations in action.
Students are directed to a website which shows green and orange bugs. The bugs are living on green trees. On the website, students can control the amount of pollution that lands on the trees. Students then observe what happens to the populations of green and orange bugs as a result of the environmental change.
As students explore the website, they fill out a sheet of 8 questions explaining their observations. The last question is a short answer question.
This activity/experiment can be a great starting point when teaching the concepts of natural selection and survival of the fittest. Students are able to visually see how organisms who are best adapted to an environment survive longer, which introduces them to the concepts of natural selection.
