Description

Adaptations Stations: A Big Science Stations Unit all about animal and plant adaptations

Adapt! includes 9 station activities to use with upper elementary students. The centers focus on comparing structural adaptations.

A lot of the stations are open-ended and may not have precise answers. Students are encouraged to think and analyze in order to draw conclusions about adaptations.

Stations:

Read It: Students read 5 organism information cards and identify the structural adaptations of each organism.

Create It: Students learn about camels and the Arctic. Then, they draw how a camel that needed to adapt to the Arctic would look. Then, they explain the structural adaptations they gave to the camel.

Tech It: Students watch two video clips and take online quizzes.

Match It: Students match animal foot photos to the environments they would live best in. Then, they describe why that type of foot would be helpful.

Analyze It: Students analyze a photo of a raccoon to draw conclusions about its structural adaptations.

Draw It: Students draw illustrations for four vocabulary terms.

Explore It: Students explore tail adaptations of a monkey and beaver using a pipe cleaner and a piece of foam. Then, they identify how each animal's tail helps it move.

Explain It: Students look at a table that describes a polar bear and black bear. Students make a Venn Diagram of the information provided, then draw conclusions about how the structural adaptations help each animal survive in its environment.

Sort It: Students sort information about leopard geckos and poison dart frogs. They check their work using an Answer Key, then describe how their skin, coloring, and feet help them survive.
