Product Description
Ada’s Violin is the true story of a slum in Cateura, where the main garbage dump
for the capital city of Asuncion, Paraguay lies. Most of the jobs in the area consist
of picking out garbage that is sellable. Out of this landfill, Favio Chavez, an
environmental engineer and musician who cared about children, had an idea to
create musical instruments out of recycled garbage. Thus the “Recycled
Orchestra” was born. Money from the orchestra’s concerts goes back to Cateura
to help families rebuild their homes, their music school, and their lives.
My guided reading packet contains reading comprehension strategies,
vocabulary, critical thinking, and post reading activities. Included is the site where
Favio Chavez has his own Ted Talk, describing his project, the instruments, etc. At
the end the students will listen to the “recycled orchestra.”
