This editable resource is designed to help students strengthen their writing skills-- specifically focusing on compound sentences, complex sentences, compound-complex sentences, transition statements, writing for purpose, appealing to the senses, and showing, not telling.

Each of the seven station task cards includes a detailed example and a task. Below is the layout of the assignment (teacher directions).
Teacher directions: Cut out the topics provided and place them in a bucket/hat/pencil holder and allow students to select their topic. Once every student has their assigned topic, advise students to write a simple sentence about the topic. For example: if their topic was “hippos”, their sentence might be “Hippos are grey.” Then, split the class into 7 groups (there are 7 stations) and give students 7-10 minutes to complete each writing station. The stations over the following topics: compound sentences, complex sentences, compound-complex sentences, transition statements, writing for purpose, appealing to the senses, and showing instead of telling. Students will add on to their story as they complete each of the prompts.
