Common Core Standards require students to know how to solve many different types of word problems. This 15 page set is aligned with Common Core State Standards to teach Add To - Start Unknown Numbers to 20 . In my experience, students learn how to better solve each story problem type when first taught in isolation. Later, students will know when and how to solve each addition and subtraction situation.
This pack is great for an introduction to start unknown story problems toward the end of first grade or the beginning of second grade.
In Add To - Start unknown story problems, students will solve to find the start of problem in a missing addend format.
Example: Jill has some lemons. Sam gives her 13 more lemons. Now Jill has 17 lemons. How many lemons did Jill have to start with?
Students will find how many lemon Jill started with.
_____ + 13 = 17
Students will solve by drawing a picture, using a number line, using a ten frame writing an equation, and filling in the answer in sentence form.
