3x+2=5x … right? Or x+x=x^2 … right? As teachers, we see these misconceptions every day. No matter how many times we clarify the differences between adding and multiplying, students still have difficulty mastering the two procedures. ADD AND MULTIPLY MONOMIALS WITH EXPONENTS is a flash card game designed to address this issue in a kinesthetic way that students can understand.
This innovative set consists of 50 cards – 25 matching pairs. Half involve adding two monomials, and half involve multiplying them. The same monomial often appears in several problems, so that students have to think and discuss in order to make a proper match. As students work to match the sets, they begin to clearly see how the addition and multiplication processes differ.
For extra reinforcement, partners can write down their pairs after all have been matched.
When your students play ADD AND MULTIPLY MONOMIALS WITH EXPONENTS FLASH CARD GAME, they are speaking the language of mathematics together. They teach other, and they gain mastery. This activity is ideal for English Language Learners and homeschoolers alike, and it is a truly valuable addition to a program that incorporates Common Core practice. – Created by Judy Seki for “Math in a Flash!”
