When many people think of classroom transformations, they think:

“This would take me hours to set up.”

“This is going to cost so much money.”

“This looks so overwhelming.”

“I could never do this!”

What if I told you classroom transformations could be EASY to set up, FUN to implement, and STRESS-FREE?

Let's Start with the Basics...What is a Classroom Transformation?

A room transformation changes your room into a certain setting or theme to engage students in their own learning with rigorous content.

Classroom transformations are possible in EVERY classroom. You don’t have to spend hours of your time setting up a classroom transformation or spend lots of money to make it SO MUCH FUN!

If you're looking for ways to make more meaningful connections to math in the real world, this is the activity for you! Students will embark upon a day as a "donut shop owner" while practicing this difficult math concept at the same time. Understanding mixed numbers can be difficult for fifth graders and this activity is great practice!

Your 5th graders will solve math challenges involving adding and subtracting mixed numbers with UNLIKE denominators.

A Quick Description

Have students pretend they are donut shop owners for a day. Students complete 10 mixed number challenges. Print out all 10 posters and all 10 aligned challenges. Distribute them around your room. Give each child a recording sheet. Explain to students that they will become business owners and will need to complete all challenges. They have to find all the challenges you've left around the classroom and find the answers to each one. They use the recording sheet to mark off each challenge as they go. This math activity is perfect for fifth graders. It aligns with 5.NF.1.

How to Play

Step 1: Tell your class that they are donut shop owners today and will practice with mixed number fraction problems. Students solve math challenges set up around the room. They can be completed in any order and you can choose how many challenges students complete or what time frame they have to meet YOUR needs.

Set-up is quick and easy. Simply print the 10 posters, the math worksheets, and a recording sheet for each student. Place them around your room and you’re ready to begin! Additional door décor, editable name tags, editable admission tickets, and themed banner are included if you want to use them!

Step 2: Let students move around the room and solve each challenge! Each time students solve a math challenge, they go to the teacher to get it checked. Students can work independently, in partners, or groups. Your choice!

Step 3: When students finish all ten challenges (or however many you assign), they win! You can give them the certificate of completion included. I also reward my students with a donut at the end.

Step 4: Most of the time, there are early or fast finishers! These kiddos get to go around the room and scan the QR codes provided! Each QR code leads to a fun fact about donuts that they can record on the sheet provided or a piece of notebook paper. This keeps everyone happy and on task!

This is a perfect review activity before giving a 5th grade mixed number assessment or as an extra practice activity. Step by step lesson plans are included so you know exactly what to do. It can be used as a spiral review and is easy to set up and implement. It is great for any class that needs something fun to reinforce when teaching fractions. The QR codes add in technology as well. Classroom transformation ideas are a new trend in education and can set the stage to engage!

These classroom transformations can be used for elementary children as a worksheet alternative, printables, in math stations, center rotations, math centers, as enrichment or remediation, in small groups, as test prep, as worksheets,  escape room alternatives, homework practice (take what you don’t finish home for homework), printables, and so much more! These math activities are made to be flexible so you can use them however you’d like in your classroom.

You no longer need to spend hours prepping your classroom for your next classroom transformation! These hands on, low prep activities will keep your students engaged while practicing rigorous material at the same time.

Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, 𝘢/𝘣 + 𝘤/𝘥 = (𝘢𝘥 + 𝘣𝘤)/𝘣𝘥.)
