Addition concepts is the our first unit of the school year. During this unit, students begin to understand that we can put two groups of objects together to make a larger group. This will eventually lead to the concept of addition and understanding that when we put two numbers together (addends) we create a larger number (the sum). Students are expected to use the academic language to explain their thinking. During this unit, we only add numbers to 10, eventually leading to adding larger addends to get bigger sums.
This unit consists of differentiated work for students on IEP’s, ELL students and students who may just need extra time and practice. Constructive feedback is always appreciated! I hope that you enjoy this unit!
