Hello! I created this activity to give my students more practice with identifying and using complements of 10 (at my school we call them lovebirds!).
After printing, cut out the cards so that the nests are separated from the birds. Have students match the nests to the birds that represent the sum of the 3 eggs. If you are working with students as they match the pictures, have them explain their strategies verbally. Emphasize the ease of looking for complements of 10 when adding. For example, when adding 5 + 2 + 5, it is easier to think of it as 5 + 5 + 2, because 5 + 5 = 10, and then you just add 2 more. When students recognize the power of knowing and recognizing the two numbers that add up to 10, solving problems mentally becomes much easier!
Included in this activity are:
- 20 nests of 3 single digit numbers
- 20 colorful birds with sums on them
- an answer key
- an 8.5 x 11 inch reference poster that can be hung and/or used during the activity (you could even shrink it on a copier and tape it to kids' desks!)
- a worksheet for quick assessment after completing the activity
This activity would work well in RtI groups and math centers, but could also be done whole group (I laminate the pieces and put magnets on the back so I can display it on the whiteboard.)
Thank you for looking! :)
