In my classroom, I'm constantly looking for ways to encourage students to think critically and to apply their knowledge, rather than simply sharing what they know on a fill in the blank work sheet. I teach gifted and high ability third grade students, and no two days are ever alike in my room! I incorporate reading and writing across the curriculum... These think dots are a great way to encourage writing skills in the mathematics classroom!
Think dots are a differentiation strategy designed to encourage higher level thinking. Each “dot” contains a task, with the tasks increasing in cognitive demand the higher the dot number. Students select a task by rolling a dice or by choice (allowing for differentiation by student interest and learning style). As the teacher, you decide how many dots your students must complete. Think dots can be used as a stand alone activity, as a center, or in small group settings!
This download includes a think dots board for adding fractions. The activities on this board are correlated to Common Core State Standard 4.NF.B.3.C, but could also be used with advanced third grade students and struggling fifth grade students.
