In order to complete this activity, students should be provided with colored manipulatives. They must then complete a tally table in which they will record the colors of the manipulatives and how many items are those particular colors. Upon completion of the tally table students will determine the total number of colored objects they possess. They will then be asked to answer a series of questions, such as, "What fractions of the counters are blue?" Students will then need to add the various fractions of colors. These fractions will have common denominators because they will all be part of the total. There are two worksheets for this activity. There is also a third worksheet included to allow the students to practice what they have learned. The practice worksheet includes a tally table with three questions, as well as, twelve basic calculation questions.
