This is a mini-lesson, guided, and independent practice with fractions involving like denominators. It is an introduction to the addition of fractions. Word problems with whole numbers are used to show that the actions are the same whether the numbers are whole numbers or fractions. Each fraction word problem is designed for the strategy of drawing a picture to solve. I would highly suggest letting students use crayons or colored pencils on the independent practice to match the objective of the lesson.
