This is a quiz on adding fractions with unlike denominators with both problems in isolation as well as in the context of word problems. The answer key for this quiz is included with answers represented as proper fractions, improper fractions, and mixed numbers. In addition, the answers are simplified if needed. One strategy that we used when teaching our students how to add fractions with unlike denominators that was very effective is the line strategy. Write the fractions that you want to add vertically one on top of the other with some space in between. Extend the fraction bar out for each fraction making a long line. Teach students to write out multiples of the numerator and denominator of both fractions until they find a common denominator. Teach the students to then circle the equivalent fractions and add them together. This line strategy works great for adding and subtracting fractions, equivalent fractions, and comparing and ordering fractions. This quiz could also be used as guided/independent practice or homework.
