This activity is used to introduce integer addition. The students develop the rules for adding integers for themselves. There are many benefits to using this discovery process in your classroom. Students can become engaged in using their critical thinking skills. Instead of just learning how to apply and use the rules for adding integers, they gain more ownership of the material and are able to understand why the rules work and how they were developed.
This activity focuses on adding integers using zero pairs. The “Zero Pairs” slide can be projected as a visible reference while students begin. Students can work in pairs or individually. They complete a chart and are guided through color coding and a worksheet with questions to develop the rules for adding integers.
