Directions for 4 different learning centers designed to help students understand the concept of adding integers, without giving them a rule to work with. Students are directed & encouraged to develop their own rules based on their observations while working on the center activities. Students may move to an application/practice center once they have demonstrated their understanding of the concept.
A recording sheet and the practice center directions are also included.
Centers use basic math classroom materials - number lines, 2-color counters, cards.
The activities were developed to build a conceptual understanding of addition of integers. While this takes a few extra days, it has proven to be much more effective than simply giving them a rule to follow and expecting it to stick with them.
