Are you looking for another way for students to practice adding mixed numbers in real-world situations? Are you tired of finding the same mistakes in regrouping again and again?

Error analysis problems are a great way to check your students' understanding of a concept.Instead of just solving the same problems again and again on a worksheet, they have to use their critical thinking skills to determine where, if anywhere, the example student(s) went wrong. This forces them to think outside of the box and develop a deeper understanding of the WHY behind the procedures and processes.

This download includes five error analysis problems that practice adding mixed numbers with like denominators. All of the problems will require “regrouping” to solve, though converting to improper fractions could also be used.
On my answer key, I have provided an example of a student response, but other answers may be acceptable as well.

This perfectly aligns with 4th grade Common Core standard:4.NF.B.3.C: Add and subtract mixed numbers with like denominators, e.g., by replacing each mixed number with an equivalent fraction, and/or by using properties of operations and the relationship between addition and subtraction.

These tasks would be great to use during guided math centers, whole-group centers, or independent practice.
