The fraction bundle was created to give students a comprehensive understanding of the standard 4.3 and the elements of the standard (4.3a, 4.3b, 4.3c, 4.3d). There is an activity for each section of the standard that can be used in a math center or a small group. Each activity gives students an opportunity for practice and mastery. The activities and printables come with and without QR Codes so students can independently check their answers.
The first activity is renaming equivalent fractions (improper fractions) to mixed numbers and mixed numbers to equivalent factions. The activity includes mixed number cards, equivalent fraction cards, model cards that represent the mixed number, and 2 set of printables.
4.3a This activity gives students practice for adding fractions by joining parts and subtracting by separating or taking away. Included is a game board, equation cards, model cards that illustrate the equation and two sets of printables. I have also included answer cards to match to the equation cards to be used as an activity instead of a game. Students can work cooperatively or independently for this activity.
4.3b Decomposing fractions into a sum of fractions is a sequencing activity with a fraction card, decomposed sums card, and a matching number line model that demonstrates the decomposed fractions. There are two sets of printables for this activity. One set is a model that represents a decomposed fraction (with or without the QR codes). The other printable is for students to decompose the fraction.
4.3c I have created two activities for this standard. The first activity is for the section of the standard of adding and subtracting with properties of operations (adding or subtracting whole number first, and fractions second) This activity has a game board, adding & subtracting equation cards, and answer cards. There is one printable.
The second activity is a scaffolding activity for the same standard with the rule of adding and subtracting fractions by renaming the mixed number as equivalent fractions. The cards allow students to successfully complete each step accurately and put the steps in a sequential order.
4.3d There are 16 word problems for adding and subtracting fractions. I have also included bar models that I use to scaffold the activity for struggling learners. The cards can also be used independently by matching the bar model to the word problem.
I have created this game and activity with QR codes to engage students in technology and math. Download the free QR reader on an IPad, IPhone, or Touch IPod. Students can check their answers independently.
I teach in inclusion classrooms with special education students, students in an early intervention program and proficient learners. These activities was created to motivate all students through differentiation. Hope you enjoy the activity!
