If your students are anything like mine, they HATE math but love playing games!
Using a tracking sheet, and powerpoint slide print outs, turn your room into the Game of Life by giving students careers and salaries, pay days, speeding tickets, and the opportunity to buy a car, house, choose a college to attend, electronics, entertainment and vacation.
Students start off with 200,000 + their salary and then are guided to the 6 different categories listed above. Throughout the buying process students have the opportunity to receive paydays and lottery tickets. However, they are also speeding tickets to be given out!
Working at a title 1 school, students were ecstatic to choose fancy sports cars and go on great vacations. I did this activity on Monday and on Friday I was still getting asked if we could play again. (They literally had no idea this was the math lesson for the day)
Aligned with math standards, students are adding and subtracting multi digit numbers through the hundred thousands place. By given a tracking sheet, students are to track their deposits, withdrawals and new totals made throughout game.
It truly is a fun way to have your students and add and subtract all while giving them a real world twist!
I hope you enjoy!
